I went shopping today for chrysanthemums for my front porch. I wanted to buy the same variety I bought last fall. My problem was that I couldn't remember the name of those mums.
I had saved the plastic name tab and stuck it in the ground when I planted them out front. The mums didn't survive the winter, and the tab didn't survive the lawn mower this summer. When I went looking for it a couple of days ago, all I could recover was a tiny corner of it. That was no help at all.
So I took a copy of the photograph I took of those mums last fall to the shop where I bought them. The young woman who helped me asked if I remembered the name, and all I could tell her was that it was "something or other bronze". She said it would be like finding a needle in a haystack since there are over 2300 different varieties of chrysanthemums.
Although she, and the owner of the shop, Louis Hillenmeyer, were impressed by my skills as a photographer, the image I had didn't jog their memories.
So, I wandered around in an attempt to find a similar variety. One caught my eye, and I searched for the plastic name tab. When I pulled it out of the pot, what did I see? The words Roadrunner Bronze. Bingo!
Unfortunately, the few pots they had of them were really past their prime. Well beyond the point where I took that image last fall. But I decided that was okay. I had satisfied my curiosity as to the name of that variety. And it would be nice to try something different this year.
After browsing around a bit more, I settled on a variety called Fall Concerto. These are still mostly closed buds, although a few blooms are opening.
Here are a couple of images of them at this early stage. I'll post more as they mature.
