I think it's more like will he have a use for you when you return. It's a cat, after all.

Perhaps he will show his displeasure at your absence by pulling any and all loose rugs in the house and piling them in front of the main door, blocking your re-entry. Had a Siamese once that did that when we left him alone for a weekend.
